Police guards will return to Egyptian university campuses, which were previously off-limits since the 2011 upheaval, after a court order on Monday authorized their return for security reasons, state-run MENA news agency reported.

The Court of Urgent Matters issued the ruling in a lawsuit that complained a recent wave of violent clashes in universities hindered the education process.

Students supporting ousted president Mohamed Morsi have for months been staging near-daily protests inside and around their universities. Al-Azhar University in eastern Cairo has been at the forefront of these protests.

Hundreds of male and female students have been arrested, while others received punishments or were dismissed from the university.

During the clashes, the Interior Ministry refused to enter the campus for legal reasons, leading university officials to demand a police presence on the campus to maintain security.

According to the newly issued university law, protests and propaganda for presidential candidates will be prohibited inside campuses in the future, and deans can dismiss disruptive students without regular legal procedures as before. Endi
