The income gap between the rich and the poor in Vietnam remained huge, said a report released by Vietnam's General Statistics Office (GSO) and the World Bank (WB) on Tuesday.

The report on Vietnamese residents' living standards showed that Vietnamese urban residents in 2012 earned an average of 3 million Vietnamese dong (142 U.S. dollars) a month, while monthly income of rural residents was 1.6 million Vietnamese dong (76 U.S. dollars).

The group of the country's poorest people pocketed an average 512,000 Vietnamese dong (24 U.S. dollars) per month, up 38.5 percent from 2010, while the richest saw average income of 4.8 million Vietnamese dong (227 U.S. dollars), an increase of 40 percent over the previous year.

Sandeep Mahajan, an economist from World Bank Vietnam, said the report can be considered as a major tool for WB and Vietnamese policy makers in their researches, adding that such kind of studies should be further promoted.

The survey on Vietnamese residents' living standards is conducted annually to collect information on monthly income, spending, education and healthcare, among others. Endi
