The Kenyan government has extended its security operation to the sprawling refugee camps in Dadaab of northern Kenya as a move to intensify crackdown on criminals behind insecurity in the East African nation.

Dadaab divisional police commander Kalicha Roba said the operation is jointly conducted by combined team of security officers and is aimed at flushing out criminals and Al-Shabaab elements who have been blamed for the attacks that have rocked the country in the recent weeks.

"We are carrying out the operation with a human face and in a systematic way. We are moving from door to door. We believe the camps are home to aliens and criminals who don't have the documents required to qualify them to be refugees," Roba said.

Roba refused to divulge more information on how the operation is being conducted in the camps and did not say how many suspects have been arrested so far.

Early Sunday, the police launched the operation in Ifo 1 and Dagahaley camps. The two camps host the biggest number of refugees.

Roba said that the aim of the operation just like the one that was going on in Mombasa and Eastleigh suburb of Nairobi was to recover the weapons used in attacks and apprehend criminals behind the attacks.

"These (criminals) are the individuals we are looking for because they are the same people who carry out attacks, but it becomes difficult to identify them," Roba said.

The security operation also comes at a time that Kenya has been rocked by a series of terrorist attacks including a church and small restaurants incidents in Mombasa and Nairobi where gunmen killed at least 12 people and injured about 50 others. Endi
