Burundi gov't expels UN official over attempting to destabilize Burundi

The Burundian government has declared UN Burundi Chief Security Adviser Paul Dobbie personal non grata and gave him 24 hours to leave for attempting to destabilize the East African country, a letter sent to him by Burundian External Relations and International Cooperation Minister Laurent Kavakure said Thursday.

Dobbie were requested to leave the country's territory within 48 hours, beginning with April 17, 2014, said the letter signed by Kavakure.

Paul Dobbie is an Australian national and has been working for the United Nations since September 1994.

The decision to expel the senior official at the UN Office in Burundi (BNUB) follows the divulgation of a UN confidential report sent on April 3, 2014 by the BNUB to the UN Headquarters in New York on an alleged distribution of arms to the Imbonerakure youths of the country's National Council for the Defense of Democracy- Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD).

BNUB Spokesman Vladimir Monteiro however abstained from commenting on Dobbie's expulsion.

Early this week, the Burundian government called those allegations "rumors" and urged the UN Secretary-General to conduct "deep investigations" to check the veracity of the alleged distribution of arms to the Imbonerakure youths. Endi
