Researchers from the Dublin-based Amber center have developed a new process to mass produce graphene-based material, said a press release issued on Wednesday by the European Commission (EC).
According to the EC, the new method, which promises to be simple and affordable, could be used by industries for applications such as highly efficient batteries.
The research team is part of the graphene flagship, a 1-billion-euro (1.37 billion U.S. dollars) European Union (EU) initiative to boost new technologies and innovation during the next 10 years.
"From lighter aircraft to better batteries -- graphene truly is the new wonder material," said EC Vice President Neelie Kroes.
"By getting top European researchers and businesses to work together, we can ensure Europe takes the lead. This is the EU investing in an innovative future," she added.
The graphene flagship is part of the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagships announced by the European Commission in January 2013.
FET Flagships are highly ambitious initiatives involving close collaboration with national and regional funding agencies, industry and partners from outside the European Union. Endi
