The Nepal government has on Thursday signed a construction agreement with China CAMC Engineering Co. for the development of the second international airport in the Himalayan country.

Ratish Chandra Lal Suman, chief of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the aviation regulatory body in the country, and Luo Yan, chairman and president of China CAMC, signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) amidst a function held at CAAN in Kathmandu.

With the MoU signing the construction of Pokhara Regional International Airport is certain to be implemented. The Nepal government had been preparing to develop the airport as an alternative for the existing Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the country's only international airport for the last four decades.

Nepali government officials also hailed the Chinese government for supporting Nepal's aviation sector.

During the ceremony, Yan said her company will spare no effort to ensure every international standard while constructing the airport.

She also expressed commitment to accomplish the project within the set time frame.

As per the MoU signed today, the Chinese contractor should complete the project within three years from the day it started construction.

"This agreement is a milestone in Nepal's aviation history," Suman said.

Nepal's Aviation Secretary Bhim Prashad Acharya and the Chinese ambassador to Nepal Wu Chuntai also participated in the ceremony. Endi
