British thriller to open Edinburgh International Film Festival

The 2014 Edinburgh International Film Festival will be opened by the World Premiere of British crime thriller "Hyena" on the evening of June 18, according to the Festival program launched on Wednesday.

A total of 156 features from 47 countries and regions were scheduled to be shown at the 68th Edinburgh International Film Festival, including 11 World premieres, 8 International premieres, and a range of special screenings and events.

The Festival strands include classic strands from Animation to Shorts to the Director's Showcase, as well as new additions like Films on Film, "Wicked and Wild", and a new take on "Teen Spirit" from the Festival's Young Programers team.

This year continues the Festival's grand tradition of showcasing new and exciting films from around the world, and there are also several special focuses in the program, including the Focus on Germany and Focus on Iran.

Awards are back in fashion this year at the Festival, with a whole suite of Awards including The Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film, which is named in homage to one of Britain's most original filmmakers, The Award for Best International Feature Film, Short Film Awards supported by Virgin Atlantic, The Audience Award, and The Award for Best Documentary Feature Film all boasting exciting nominees.

The Festival will be closed by the American independent film "We'll Never Have Paris" on the evening of June 29.
