Slovenian WWII veterans to attend D-Day commemoration in Normandy

A delegation of Slovenian WWII veterans will participate in an international commemoration of the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France on Friday.

This is the first time that Slovenian veterans have been invited to the official commemoration of the Normandy landings.

The invitation amounted to an important recognition for the Slovenian partisan movement during the Second World War, said Janez Stanovnik, the delegation leader and former head of the Veterans' Association of the National Liberation Struggle.

Slovenian partisans did not directly get involved in the Normandy landings in 1944, but their years of fighting against Nazi invaders on Slovenian soil contributed a lot to the victory of World War II, said historian Gorazd Bajc.

In memory of the cooperation between Slovenian partisans and Allied forces in WWII, Bajc and other three historians published a book entitled "Together: Combat Comradeship between the Slovenian Partisans and the Allies." Endi
