At least 11 people were killed and two others injured after a speeding freight train rammed a jeep, in which the victims were traveling, at an unmanned crossing in the eastern Indian state of Bihar late last evening, a senior police official said Sunday.

"The victims were all occupants of the jeep and the mishap happened at Gobrahi-Rajghat between Majhaulia and Sugauli railway stations in the state's West Champaran district. While four people died on the spot, seven others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital where the other two injured have been admitted," he said on condition of anonymity.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.

Unmanned crossings are still prevalent across India as the safety record of state-owned Indian Railways is poor with a number of mishaps happening every year. Endi
