The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Lagos World Tour kicked off on Monday in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
The ITTF awarded the hosting right to Nigeria to stage the maiden 2014 Africa Top 16 Cup after the country hosted the Lagos Classics in 2013.
African table tennis champion, Egypt's Omar Assar is expected to participate in the tournament. He is rated number one in the men's singles.
The tournament, tagged Lagos World Tour Nigeria Open, will be held between June 23 and June 26.
Countries including Singapore, Egypt, Russia, Benin Republic, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Ghana, Libya, Luxembourg, Morocco, Sierra-Leone, Togo, Tunisia and host country Nigeria, would participate in the classics.
The ITTF has listed 36 umpires for the four-day tournament, from Nigeria, Ghana, Algeria, Libya, Togo, Congo Brazzaville and Benin.
The championship would feature five events, namely men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles. Endit
