S. African mayor charged with Mandela funeral fraud

Buffalo City municipality Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha and several senior officials were charged on Tuesday with alleged corruption and fraud involving Nelson Mandela's memorial service.

Ncitha, her deputy Temba Tinta and speaker Luleka Simon-Ndzele as well as the ruling African National Congress (ANC) Regional Secretary Phumlani Mkolo were arrested in relation to the Nelson Mandela memorial saga which is currently under investigation, police said.

The Dispatch newspaper reporter a few weeks after the funeral that politically-connected tenderpreneurs cashed in on the former statesman's memorial services, and the ANC had T-shirts made with public money.

Mkolo, the ANC regional secretary, was said to have engineered the movement of funds into various bank accounts.

The ANC on Tuesday welcomed the arrest of the officials. Endi
