The 8th World Choir Games opened on Wednesday evening in Riga, marking the culmination of the activities that celebrate the city's status as this year's European Capital of Culture.
"Song has immense power, and it can unite people who speak different languages and live in different places of the world," Latvian President Andris Berzins said in the opening speech.
He wished every participant to feel happy for being together and singing together in Latvia, whose people like singing.
The World Choir Games is the world's largest choirs competition, known as world's choirs "Olympics". It was first held in 2000 in Linz, Austria and has since then taken place every two years.
Its main purpose is to let the sound of the song unite the people from different races, ethic groups, and different countries.
According to organizers, this year's World Choir Games is expected to attract 27,000 singers and 460 choirs from 73 countries and regions.
The festival will last ten days and wrap up on July 19. Endi
