EU expands sanctions on Syria

The European Union (EU) expanded sanctions on Syria over the government's "violent repression" of its civilian population, the Council of EU Tuesday said in a statement.

The EU's foreign ministers agreed to add three people and nine entities to the current sanction list. They will be subject to an asset freeze and a ban on entering the EU, the statement said.

They were targeted "due to their involvement in the violent repression of the civilian population or their support to the regime," according to the statement.

The decision brings the total of persons under EU restrictive measures to 192 and the number of entities to 62.

The names of the targeted persons and entities are expected to be published on Wednesday and the sanctions will enter into force at the same time. Endi
