Poland reports stable gas supplies in 2013

In 2013, mandatory gas reserves were not called upon because there was no threat to the safety of gas supplies, the Polish Economy Ministry said in its gas supply safety report on Thursday.

"Gas imports from former USSR countries amounted to 77.13 percent in 2013 versus 22.87 percent of gas bought within the EU," the ministry said.

In 2010, EU purchases amounted to only 10.41 percent of all gas imports, the ministry noted.

"2013 saw an increase in imports of natural gas both for domestic needs and for resale, conducted by other entities than the dominating natural gas company (PGNiG)," the report read.

As well as Poland's major gas player, PGNiG, there were 13 other gas importers in 2013, with imports increasing to 968 million cubic metres from 605 million cubic metres in 2012.
