Portugal is holding its 12th International Sand Sculpture (FIESA) in Pera, Algarve, southern Portugal, where 40,000 tons of sand have been transformed into sculptures.

This year's theme is music, with people, objects and scenes to do with music covering a 15,000-square-meter area and sculptures as high as 12 meters.

Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Madone, Bono, the Beatles, Pink Floyed, Freddie Mercury, Frank Zappa, Ray Charles, Pavarotti, Mozart and Amalia are among musicians who have been portrayed.

FIESA has also organized sculpture activities, games to do with sculptures and open air projections about the event.

Vistors can visit the festival both by day and by night, with sculptures illuminated by lights.

The festival, organized annually by ProSandArt, a company specialized in ephemeral art, starts on May 25 and lasts until Oct. 25. Enditem
