Iran imported over 34,000 cars, valued at about 683 million U.S. dollars, in the first four months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-July 22), Tehran Times daily reported on Thursday.
Iran's car imports rose by 168 percent in quantity and 154 percent in value during the four-month period compared to the same period in the previous year, according to the report.
Iranian lawmaker Ali Alilou said Iran was planning to scrap all car import tariffs in the next two years.
The measure is necessary to boost domestic production and make the auto industry competitive, said Alilou, who is a member of the Majlis (parliament) Industries and Mines Committee.
He urged the government to stop propping up Iran's struggling automobile sector, which has been criticized for the low quality and high prices of its products.
Iran produced more than 626,110 cars in 2013, which made the country the 20th largest car manufacturer in the world, according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers. Endi
