Bangladesh opposition protests against Gaza strikes

Former prime minister Khaleda Zia's 20-party opposition alliance Saturday staged demonstration in capital Dhaka and elsewhere cross the country to protest the Israeli military attack on Palestinian people in Gaza.

Condemning the Israeli attacks on Gaza civilians, thousands of leaders and activists of the bloc led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), sported black badges, carried black flags, brought out a procession in the capital Saturday afternoon.

The procession paraded various streets of the city and ended amid a rally from where the opposition leaders demanded immediate end to the attacks.

They urged the world leaders to take immediate steps to stop the brutal attacks on the Gaza civilians.

BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, flanked by leaders of the alliance, announced the program at a press conference on Aug. 12.

Incidents of mass protests have also been reported from most Bangladesh cities and towns on Saturday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's cabinet had earlier strongly condemned Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths, bloodshed and destruction of public property and facilities that serve the Palestinian people.

The cabinet also called upon the international community to pressure Israel to stop the air strikes in Gaza and intervene in order to protect civilians. Endi
