Landslide kills 5 in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Five people, including four children were killed Wednesday after a landslide triggered by incessant rains hit a residential house in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The landslide triggered at Kala Zar in Reasi district, about 160 north of Jammu city, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Five persons were killed in a landslide following a cloudburst in the wee hours today at Kala Zar area of Chassana village in Reasi district," an official said. "The victims include four children and an elder women who were sleeping at the time of incident."

Officials said the dead bodies have been recovered.

For the past three days incessant rains are going on in the region.

Meanwhile, traffic on 298 km-long Srinagar-Jammu highway remained blocked for hours together due to landslides triggered by heavy rains.

In the wake of heavy rains across the region, the authorities issued an alert as rivers were seen flowing above danger mark.

"We have issued a flood alert for areas south of Srinagar as water level of River Jhelum has gone up to danger level," the Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Kashmir, Mir Javed Jaffer said. "People living across Jhelum in these areas have been asked to shift to the safer places."
