Manufacturing activity in the New York region expanded robustly in September, said a survey released Monday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
According to the latest Empire State Manufacturing Survey, the general business conditions index jumped 13 points to 27.5. The new orders and shipments indexes also posted gains, rising to 16.9 and 27.1, respectively.
Employment indexes showed a slight increase in employment levels and hours worked.
Forty-six percent of respondents reported that conditions had improved over the month, while 18 percent reported that conditions had worsened.
Index for the six-month outlook was optimistic. The index for future general business conditions was unchanged from last month at 46.7.
The Empire State manufacturing index closely watches manufacturing activity in New York, northern New Jersey and southern Connecticut. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York conducts the survey monthly and participants represent a variety of industries. Endi
