Tokyo shares ended lower on Tuesday on profit-taking after recent rally, while the market's sentiment was also strained due to an upcoming U.S. central bank's policy meeting.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 36.76 points, or 0.23 percent, from Friday at 15,911.53.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 2.86 points, or 0.22 percent, at 1, 310.86.
Decliners were led by real estate, insurance and rubber products issues.
