Cuba's national women's basketball team Wednesday traveled to Spain for a series of friendlies in the run up to the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women.h The games prior to the tournament, hosted by Turkey from Sept 27 to Oct. 5, will be very important, since they will give the Cuban athletes a chance to measure themselves against two strong teams, the Spanish and the Canadians, Cuban coach Alberto Zabala said.

On the tournament itself, Zabala said he was confident Cuba will be able to place among the top eight teams.

"Some might think that's a dream, but we know we have the potential to achieve that goal," he said.

The world championship will feature 16 teams in four groups, with Cuba in Group C, along with Australia, Belarus, and South Korea.

Cuban basketball expert Dalia Henry said the team is in "very good form," and trained to "counteract the weak points that can arise in competition."

Following the world tournament, Cuba will compete in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico, in November, with an eye to winning the gold medal. Endi
