Continuous clashes between rival militants in suburban Tripoli have damaged several main power lines, throwing Libya's western towns and cities into a total blackout, an electric company said on Sunday.
The power transmission was malfunctioning as a result of the violent clashes currently taking place in Washefana region, west of Tripoli, a spokesman for General Electric Company said.
He said that the company is experiencing technical problems with the electric network covering the area ranging from the capital city of Tripoli to Ras Jadir, the border control sitting between Libya and Tunisia.
The spokesman added that they are trying to fix the lines, however he also reminded the citizens to be well prepared for long- time power cut as they are unable to provide their service as required.
Some Tripoli citizens told Xinhua that their electricity was cut over the weekend since Friday, and now many companies and shops remained closed on Sunday.
Tripoli has witnessed a drastic escalation of violence since July, when deadly clashes erupted between Islamist militants and pro-secular militias. The heavy fighting still flares in suburban areas of Tripoli in Wershefana.
Medical sources said the clashes has killed at least 52 people and injured 410 others. Endi
