The United States recently requested Algeria to provide a list of Algerians who joined the Islamic State (IS), a security source revealed Sunday to Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The source noted that the U.S. intelligence also sent similar requests to Egypt and Tunisia as part of a process to collect data about Arab fighters, notably North Africans, who joined the ranks of IS and al-Nusra Front in Iraq and Syria.
The United States considers Algeria as a key partner in the fight against terrorism. In April, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said here that Algeria is a "regional power and the United States will continue to work with this country in the Global Counterterrorism Forum."
Last week, Kerry visited Saudi Arabia and managed to secure the support of 10 Arab nations for a global drive to clamp down on the IS. They agreed to join a campaign against IS to stop the creation of new jihadists, while no Arab country has announced it would send troops to Iraq.
