Former Maldives president leaves to attend UN General Assembly

Former President of Maldives Mohamed Waheed departed for New York on Monday, to attend the 69th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meetings as a special envoy to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

President's Office spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali said that Waheed was to speak at UNGA on Sept. 30, and that he would voice out Maldivian government's policies and concerns in his speech.

Waheed is joined on the trip by Maldivian Foreign Minister Dhunya Maumoon and a delegation of other senior government officials.

A record breaking number of about 140 heads of state and governments are expected to attend the meetings.

Attendees for this year's UNGA not only include diplomats, but celebrities the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Watson and Victoria Beckham.

Leonardo DiCaprio was chosen as UN Messenger of Peace on Climate Change.

Global issues such as Islamic State (IS), Ebola, and climate change are some areas of particular interest that is to be addressed in the meetings.
