Student protest enters 2nd day in Mexico

Thousands of students on Friday staged protest for the second day against changes to school regulations and study programs.

Over 10,000 students from Mexican National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) gathered in different parts of Mexico city from 7 a.m. (1200 GMT) to about noon to protest the changes which were passed by school officials in the early hours of Wednesday.

The protest forced the cancellation of classes and blocked one of the city's main arteries, leading Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong to offer dialogue with the students.

"We will listen to the demands of the students to resolve the situation," Osorio Chong told legislators at the Chamber of Deputies, where he was previously scheduled to address lawmakers.

In a radio interview Friday morning, IPN director Yoloxochitl Bustamante defended the changes, saying they were aimed at updating the school's regulations and study programs. But he also announced a one-year suspension in their implementation to give the protesters a chance to express their grievances. Endi
