A militant was killed during an ongoing anti-terror operation in Kizilyurt district in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan on Monday, the National Anti-terror Committee (NAC) said in a statement.

"The militant was preliminarily identified as Alidibir Asudinov, a bomber of the local Kizilyurt terrorist group, which is on the federal wanted list for terrorist crimes," Itar-Tass news agency quoted the statement as saying.

The group was planning to conduct a series of terrorist acts in Dagestan, the statement said, as the police found a 15-liter bucket stuffed with explosives, a self-made explosive device and several sacks filled with 170 kilograms of explosives in the house where the gunman had been located.

Besides, a minibus was found near the house, with a ready-to-be- used self-made explosive device in it. "A sub-machine gun, a pistol and some grenades were also found during the operation," the NAC said.

Violence is common in southern Russia, especially in North Caucasus, with militants attacking government establishments and civilians regularly. Two suicide attackers blew themselves up in October 2013 and December separately, killing at least 20 people altogether.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned September last year that the situation in the North Caucasus remained a challenge for state security. He called for the mobilization of all law enforcement departments to maintain law, order and peace in the region. Endite
