French President Francois Hollande on Wednesday spoke with United States President Barack Obama, and major European leaders about the offensive against the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria and Iraq and how to bring about a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine.

Hollande, Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi "confirmed their determination to fight against Daech as part of the international coalition's offensive," said a statement issued by the Elysee.

Regarding the situation in Iraq where IS fighters seized a third of the territory, western leaders reiterated their support to local forces, hoping the dialogue between the Iraqi parties would pave the way for the creation of a unity government.

As for the Ukrainian crisis, they insisted on the necessity that two rival camps implement an effective ceasefire, release prisoners and stop weapons transfer in order to reach a lasting diplomatic end of the crisis, according to the statement. Endit
