India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won control of the country's financial capital Mumbai through a legislative election in the state of Maharashtra, while also grasping the northern state of Haryana from the Congress, said vote counting results Sunday.

This would end 15 years of rule by the Congress and its allies in Mumbai.

However, the BJP could be short of an absolute majority in the Maharashtra assembly, therefore needing to set up an alliance with the rightwing Hindu Shiv Sena party, said analysts.

The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party, the incumbent ruling coalition in Maharashtra, admitted defeat in the election and the Congress leader in the state announced resignation.

The BJP got an absolute majority in the local assembly of Haryana, a state neighboring the capital New Delhi and having the booming business city of Gurgaon, where many international corporations are based.

The winning by the BJP in the legislative elections in the two states, which were held on Monday, confirmed the support of the people to the economic policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, five months after he came to power, said BJP officials. Endi
