Russian Deputy Defence Minister Dmitry Bulgakov on Thursday announced plans to test the performance of Russian military vehicles in the extreme climatic conditions of the Kola Peninsula.

According to Itar-Tass news agency, the Arctic tests, to be conducted by a Russian Defence Ministry research team, will measure the performance of a range of military vehicles in conditions of "low temperatures and high humidity", Bulgakov told local media.

The goals of the testing include the improvement of future vehicle design and gaining experience in performing a range of military tasks in Arctic conditions.

The vehicle testing will also include a 500-km journey as far as the Poluostrov Rybachiy in the remote north of the Kola Peninsula.

The Defence Ministry's Arctic expedition follows a corresponding series of vehicle tests in the dry, mountainous conditions of the Astrakhan Region and Kabardino-Balkarie during the summer. Endite
