Venezuela to expand "symphonic orchestra movement"

The Venezuelan government is expected to back the expansion of the country's social program -- "symphonic orchestra movement" -- to involve more people.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro met on Tuesday with Jose Antonio Abreu, founder of the movement, to discuss the expansion of the movement which has already brought up over 600 young adults and children. The program was created over 40 years ago with a goal to fight poverty and crime through music learning.

Abreu said the movement will continue its expansion with financial support from the Venezuelan government.

It is also seeking funds from foreign countries to expand the movement. Among others, it is planning to build a musical instrument factory with support from China and a new concert hall with the help of U.S. architect Frank Gehry, said Abreu.

Hector Rodriguez, Venezuela's vice president of social development and missions, said that the government and the movement aim to include 1 million children and teenagers in the movement by 2019. Endi
