Mexican police seized more than five tons of marijuana worth an estimated 14 million pesos (1 million U.S. dollars) in the northern state of Nuevo Leon and the north-central state of San Luis Potosi, authorities said Wednesday.

Four people were also arrested in an anti-narcotics operation, the National Security Commission said.

Members of the Federal Police were carrying out a routine check at a checkpoint along the Cadereyta-Reynosa highway, when a truck allegedly transporting prescription drugs was flagged down.

The driver carried papers that identified the cargo as pharmaceuticals, but agents detected the characteristic odor of cannabis and found that the doors of the vehicle were locked with suspicious padlocks.

Inside the vehicle, the police uncovered 595 packages weighing 3,135 kg of the drugs.

Another 2,537 kg of marijuana was uncovered among a cargo of alfalfa being transported along the San Luis Potosi-La Bonita highway, leading to the arrest of three suspects. Endi
