A paramilitary trooper of India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed, while as three of his colleagues and a civilian were wounded Wednesday in a grenade attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The grenade attack was carried out in evening by militants at Poho in Pulwama district, about 32 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Militants this evening threw a grenade towards CRPF men on routine duty at Poho in Pulwama which exploded in their midst wounding four of them and a civilian bystander," Nalin Prabhat, a senior officer of CRPF told Xinhua. "Though the wounded personnel were immediately removed to hospital, one among them was declared dead by the time he arrived at the hospital by the doctor."

The other three CRPF men and a civilian are said to be under medical supervision.

"Our men couldn't fight back as there was crowd nearby and militants took advantage of that," Prabhat said.

The attack created panic in the area. Locals said they heard the sound of explosion and ran away for safety.

Following the attack police and CRPF contingents rushed to the spot to carry out searches.

So far no militant group has claimed responsibility of the attack.

Last week eight people including a junior level officer of CRPF were wounded in a similar attack in Srinagar.

Militants challenging New Delhi's rule in the restive region are fighting guerrilla war with Indian troops since 1989. The gunfight between the militants and Indian troops takes place intermittently.

Six militants and a junior level officer of Indian military were killed in a two-day gunfight near Line of Control, officials said Wednesday. Endi
