Ten people were killed, including five children, when their plane crashed in central Colombia on Wednesday, the country's civil aviation authority said.

The airplane, which belongs to the Colombian company 'Nacional de Aviacion', crashed and burst into flames near the airport of Mariquita municipality, in the Colombian central Tolima department, the country's El Tiempo daily network reported.

The plane, with registration number HK-4464, was carrying eight passengers and two crew members when the incident occurred.

Tolima's police director, Nelson Quinonez, told local media that five charred bodies have been recovered so far, but have yet to be identified, while rescuers are still searching for the rest.

Quinonez said the pilot asked for an emergency landing minutes before the crash.

The airplane was en route from the Colombian capital Bogota to Bahia Solano, a scenic spot in the country's western Choco department.

The aviation authority is investigating the incident. Endite
