Fears about corruption have leapt among Spaniards to record levels during November, according to the latest study published by the Center for Sociological Investigation (CIS) on Thursday.

The CIS study shows that 63.9 percent of those questioned believe corruption is the number one problem in the country, leaping from 42.7 percent who cited it as a problem in October.

This is partly due to the poll being carried out between Nov. 4 and 12, a few days after the Operation Punic anti-corruption operation saw around 50 arrests, including various mayors and the former Vice-President of the Community of Madrid Francisco Granados.

Meanwhile other corruption cases such as the 'Caso Gurtel' and the 'Caso Noos,' for which the younger sister of King Felipe VI of Spain, the Infanta Cristiana, will face charges continue to make the headlines and last week, Ana Mato was forced to resign as the health minister as a result of having benefited from the Gurtel case.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy presented a series of measures aimed at combating corruption last week.

However, although corruption has taken a big leap in the public perception of Spaniards, unemployment is still the biggest worry with 77 percent considering it to be the major problem, with the general economic situation the third biggest cause for concern. Endit
