India Thursday regretted the bail granting by a Pakistan court to a key suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, while urging Islamabad to reverse the decision immediately.

India said the bail granted to Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi was " unfortunate" and would "serve as a reassurance to terrorists who perpetrate heinous crimes."

"We cannot accept that LeT's (Lashkar-e-Taiba's) chief operation commander Zakiur Lakhvi, one of the key conspirators of the Mumbai terror attacks in which so many innocent people were slaughtered, a person designated as an international terrorist by the UNSC, is being released on bail," the External Affairs Ministry said.

Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh also cried foul over the decision, saying, "It is very unfortunate, and I believe it should not have happened."

The External Affairs Ministry also said the bail "comes just two days after one of the most dastardly terrorist attacks took place against a school in Peshawar, where over a hundred children were purposefully and systematically butchered in the name of revenge."

India has accused Lakhvi of plotting the November 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attack, in which over 160 people were killed by 10 gunmen who rampaged the downtown of the city after infiltrating by sea from Pakistan. Endi
