The Portuguese state has bought 400 pages of manuscripts by renowned Portuguese writer Almeida Garrett written between 1839 and 1854 for 30,000 euros (36,708 U.S. dollars), the State Secretariat for Culture said on Friday.

The manuscripts, which are just part of a larger archive of the writer's work, were purchased from the Futscher Pereira family.

"They are mostly manuscripts signed by Almeida Garret himself, which cover 99 themes for novels, which make it possible to gain a better understanding of Garrett's work," said a statement from the State Secretariat.

Joao Baptista da Silva Leitao de Almeida Garrett, who was made first Viscount Almeida Garrett by King Pedro V was a writer, poet, journalist and politician. His most famous book is "Travels in my Homeland."

He was a renowned supporter of the Liberal Revolution of 1820, which was ultimately unsuccessful and his vocal support for the liberal cause led to his exile in England and France. He was buried in the National Pantheon in Lisbon alongside other Portuguese literary heavyweights and cultural icons. Endit
