Holiday road accident death toll rises to 128 in Thailand

Road accidents killed 70 people in Thailand on Wednesday, the second day of the accident-prone New Year week, bringing the holiday road accident death toll to 128, official data released Thursday showed.

A total of 1,133 accidents occurred nationwide on the first two days of the so-called "seven dangerous days," injuring 1,158 people, according to the directing center for road accident prevention and reduction.

Drunk driving and speeding remained the main causes, accounting for 41.92 percent and 26.4 percent of all accidents respectively, Director-General of the Department of Probation Kannikar Saengthong said.

Around 84 percent of the accidents involved motorcycles, Kannikar added.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, provinces of Phetchabun, Surat Thani, Chiang Mai and Buriram reported the highest death toll, with seven fatalities in each, according to the center.

Chiang Mai recorded 49 accidents in total, the largest number of all provinces, data showed. Endi
