At least nine people were killed and 11 others were injured in separate road accidents on Saturday in eastern and western Kenya, according to local authorities.
Five people lost their lives and six others injured in Busia County in Western Kenya. The accident happened when a lorry ferrying sugarcane to the Mumias Sugar Company overturned at the county's Nambale Trading Centre, according to the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS).
"The injured were evacuated to the Busia district hospital," the humanitarian agency said amid a surge in death toll since New Year.
Meanwhile, four other people were killed and five others were injured in a road accident that occurred on early Saturday morning along the Meru-Isiolo Road in Mungania area, eastern Kenya.
"The 14-seater matatu (minibus) rammed into the rear side of a trailer that was moving in the same direction. Initial reports indicate the driver of the matatu may have fallen asleep on the wheel, thereby causing the accident," said Traffic commandant Charlton Muriithi, adding that investigations were ongoing.
