Iran on Thursday condemned Wednesday's terrorist attack in Paris that left 12 people dead.

"Taking advantage of freedom of expression and ideological extremism and character assassination of respectful figures of religions and nations and insulting divine faiths and their values and symbols which are respected by those religions are not acceptable and are to be condemned," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham.

Any act of terrorism against innocent people is antithesis to Islamic teachings, Afkham said in a statement posted on the ministry's website.

"Those acts (of terrorism) are a continuation of the extremism wave with unprecedented physical and ideological violence prevailing worldwide during the last decade," she said.

Afkham regretted what she termed as "inappropriate double standard policies in dealing with violence and extremism which resulted in the promulgation of those behaviors."

She called for a world free from violence and extremism and expressed the hope that world leaders would adopt a unified policy without double standard policies to uproot the causes of extremist violence.

Three gunmen stormed the headquarters of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo Wednesday, killing eight journalists, two police and two others. Endit
