Gunmen kill Yemeni military officer

Unidentified gunmen killed a Yemeni military intelligence officer on Thursday morning in the southeastern province of Hadramout, a military official told Xinhua.

"Two unknown gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire from silenced weapons and killed Col. Ahmed Fakhery near his house in Hadramout," the local military source said on condition of anonymity.

The colonel was shot dead at the scene, the source added.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but al-Qaida militants are usually blamed for such armed attacks and assassinations.

The al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula on Wednesday claimed responsibility for attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket in Paris.

The impoverished Arab country has been gripped by regional al-Qaida insurgency since 2009.

Terrorist groups, mainly based in the southern and eastern provinces, have launched frequent suicide attacks on army and security targets, leaving hundreds of people dead. Endit
