Dozens killed in eastern Ukraine as fighting rages

Dozens of people have been killed over the past day in eastern Ukraine as fighting raging along the frontline, reports showed Friday.H According to the Donetsk Municipal Council, shooting erupted in the city on Thursday evening and continued throughout the night, killing at least four civilians and wounding an unspecified number of others.

Besides, one civilian was killed in a shelling in Debaltseve town, about 70 km north-east from Donetsk.

Meanwhile, one of the insurgent leaders, Eduard Basurin, said that at least 24 soldiers from rebel forces have been killed and 30 wounded during the confrontation with Ukrainian troops over the past day.

Basurin said that 50 government soldiers were killed in the fight, but Ukraine's military official denied the figure.

"Over the past 24 hours, we lost three soldiers, and 50 others were wounded," said Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for the government's military operation in the east.

According to the latest estimates of Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, more than 5,000 people have been killed in eastern Ukraine and over 10,000 wounded there since the start of the violent conflict in mid-April. Endi
