Flood victims have received humanitarian assistance in Mozambique's central province of Zambezia, the worst hit by the calamities this month, according to the chairperson for the country's National Disasters Management Institute (INGC), Joao Ribeiro, on Sunday.

He told reporters in Mocuba district in Zambezia that tents, food, clothing, water and mosquito nets were among the relief supplies.

"We can feed people for between 15 and 30 days," said Ribeiro.

The consignment for the victims are contributions by civil society organizations in Maputo.

The Coca-Cola company in Maputo has announced that it is sending its contribution to Zambezia, including 1,500 mosquito nets and 7,000 bottles of mineral water.

The chairperson of VodaCom-Mozambique, Salimo Abdulla, also announced Sunday his company has sent 6,200 mosquito nets to the central province.

The governor of the province, Abdul Razak, has thanked all those who contributed with several items to the flood sufferers.

According to the INGC, around 60,000 are in accommodation centers set up by the government. Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, who ended a three-day tour of the flooded areas, is calling for more solidarity.

The calamities inflicted heavy damage to power pylons and water supply system in Mocuba. Power was cut not only in Zambezia, but also in the entire central and northern Mozambique due to heavy rains. Endi
