Latvia strongly condemned the killing of Haruna Yukawa, a Japanese national taken hostage and decapitated by the Islamic State (IS) radical group, the Latvian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday.

"Latvia categorically condemns terrorism and any violence against civilians and conveys its sincere condolences to Haruna Yukawa's family," the ministry said in the statement.

The IS still holds captive another Japanese citizen, Kenji Goto, the ministry said.

"Latvia expresses strong support for the efforts being made by the Government of Japan and hopes that Kenji Goto will be released and it will be possible for him to return home," the Latvian ministry said.

On Jan. 20, the IS released a video demanding a ransom for the release of the two Japanese hostages. A video released late Saturday suggested that Yukawa was killed. Endit
