At least 40 workers collapsed at the You Li International garment factory in Svay Rieng province 's Bavet town on Monday morning due to chemical odors, a union leader said.

"Some 40 workers began fainting after one worker fell to the floor in the factory," said Chheng Chhoan, secretary-general of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers. "They were sent to hospitals soon after the incident. No one was in serious conditions."

He said it was the second incident in the factory after a mass fainting occurred on Friday that left 61 workers fainted.

"According to the conclusion of the Provincial Environment Department, the fainting were caused by chemical odors," he said.

The Ministry of Labor reported 1,806 faintings in 34 factories last year, up 119 percent from 823 in a year earlier; the main causes were overwork, poor health, poor environment, exposure to chemical substances, and hysteria. Endi
