33 illegal Syrian migrants rescued at sea off Turkey

A total of 33 illegal Syrian migrants aboard a sinking boat were rescued by Turkish coast guards Wednesday, private Dogan News Agency reported Thursday.

The leaking plastic boat, which suffered an engine failure and was drifting toward international waters, was spotted in the Bodrum district of Mugla province.

The boat sank shortly after all those aboard, including six women and one child, were rescued.

In a similar incident, six migrants were killed and two others went missing after a boat carrying illegal migrants sank in Bodrum on March 17.

Straddling Asia and Europe, Turkey has become a major transit point for Middle Eastern and Asian migrants and refugees fleeing from poverty or conflict in their home countries. Endit
