The High Court in Mumbai on Friday temporarily suspended the five-year jail sentence of Bollywood actor Salman Khan in a 2002 hit-and-run case.

The 49-year-old actor, who is currently out on bail, will remain free till the High Court takes up his appeal against his conviction at the next date of hearing of the case scheduled for June.

Khan was sentenced to five years in jail by a lower court Wednesday for running over pavement dwellers with his car outside a bakery in Mumbai 13 years back, in a drunken state and then fleeing the spot.

One person was killed and four others sustained injuries in the incident.

The actor's defense lawyers had claimed he was not driving the car at the time of the incident, and it was his driver who was at the wheel.

But prosecution lawyers produced several witnesses to substantiate their claims that Khan was driving the car at that time.

Khan has a huge fan following in India and has a number of films in the pipeline. Endi
