Two people were killed and five others injured when a car bomb exploded Thursday in Libya's western city of Misrata, according to a local source.

"A suicide bomber attacked the eastern gate of the city, killing two and injuring five others," the source, from the Misrata municipal council, told Xinhua.

The bomber was likely an Islamic State (IS) affiliated militant, said the source, who demanded anonymity.

The attack came after violent clashes Wednesday in Sirte, some 200 km east of Misrata, between IS militants and Libya Dawn militias.

Libya Dawn, currently dominating the capital, have engaged IS affiliated militants in violent clashes in Sirte since February.

Libya has suffered from a security vacuum since Gaddafi's regime fell in 2011. The country has been plagued with continuous violence and similar attacks since then. Endit
