A foot injury has ruled Germany's former European long-jump champion Sebastian Bayer out of the world athletics championships this August in Beijing.

The 29-year-old German won the 2012 European championships and took fifth place at the London Olympics. He has been suffering from a bruised heel and he need to make full use of the rest of the season to get fit for the Rio Olympic in 2016.

Bayer had an indoor 8.71m leap in 2009 in Italy, which was the second-longest in history behind American athletics legend Carl Lewis' world indoor record 8.79m set in 1984.

The world athletics championships will be held from Aug. 22-30 in Beijing. Bayer finished ninth in the long jump at the 2013 event in Moscow. Endi
