Triggered by heavy rainfall, several townships in central Myanmar have been severely flooded over the past week, official sources said Saturday.

At least six people have been killed as flood in Thabeikkyin Township in Mandalay reached over one-meter deep and a landslide occurred. Many houses and monasteries were also destroyed in the two-day continuous rainfall till Saturday.

Bridges collapsed and transportation was hampered in the flood- hit townships in Mandalay, residents said.

Meanwhile, another landslide triggered by torrential rain occurred on Saturday morning in Nantsam township in northern Shan State, causing damages to bridges and roads and leading to suspension of transportation services.

Landslide prevention work in several townships are underway by the local authorities.

Over the past week, heavy rainfall has been witnessed in Sagaing, Bago, and Magway regions, as well as Chin, Rakhine, Kayin and Mon states, submerging summer and monsoon paddy fields.

Some reports said that about 100,000 people have been affected by the heavy rainfall in the flood-hit areas in the country. Endi
