The Ghanaian government announced on Monday it would shut down factories that did not produce bio-degradable plastics, starting from Nov. 1.

Musah Zakaria, a public relations officer of the environment ministry, said in a statement that the ministry was taking steps to ensure that non-biodegradable imported plastics would not be accepted into the country by the stipulated time.

Stakeholders in the sector last July agreed to add bio-degradable additive to all flexible plastics produced in Ghana to make them bio-degradable for easy management.

It was also agreed that all flexible plastics below 20 microns produced in Ghana and imported shall not be allowed in the country from 1st November 2015.

The ministry has directed that flexible plastics products should be labeled with the manufacturers' name, logo, date and location of the company for easy identification where necessary.

These are part of measures to deal with hazards associated with polythene products and their attendant effect on the country's eco system. Endit
